You never know what you'll find at the Salton Sea. It's one of the reasons I really like going there, it's full of oddities. I don't know what it is, but I've gotten very strange colors when I shoot there too and oftentimes the horizon line is so hazy you can't tell where the sky ends and the water begins. Adding to the weirdness factor are the tens of thousands of fish skeletons lining the shore and the sea 'burping' due to geothermal activity. It's creepy at night.
